Morning and evening remembrances

  1. Anas bin Malik (RA) said that Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: For me to sit with people who remember Allah from Fajr until sunrise is dearer to me than freeing four slaves from the children of Isma'il (AS); and for me to sit with people who remain absorbed in the remembrance of Allah from the Asr prayer until sunset is dearer to me than freeing four slaves. [Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (3667), and al-Albani graded it Hasan in “as-Sahihah” no. (2916), and it is as he said, and it has supporting narrations] What is meant by the morning time:

☆ From after the Fajr prayer until sunrise is the best time. (Surah Qaf 39, Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 3667, graded Hasan by al-Albani and al-Arna'ut, and it is as they said; it has several routes, and whoever called it weak was not correct)

☆ From after sunrise until Zuhr is also permissible, but it is a lesser time. (Taken from: Sunan Abi Dawud no. 1503, and its chain is sahih)

☆ If one cannot recite them even by Zuhr, the morning time has passed, but if one recites them whenever possible before the evening time, then according to some scholars there is room for that too. Allah knows best.

What is meant by the evening time:

☆ From after the Asr prayer until sunset is the best time. (Surah Qaf 39, Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 3667, graded Hasan by al-Albani and al-Arna'ut, and it is as they said; it has several routes, and whoever called it weak was not correct)

☆ From after sunset until midnight is also permissible, but it is a lesser time. (Taken from: al-Bukhari, no. 3603, Sahih Ibn Hibban, no. 12341, and its chain is hasan, as-Sahihah 6/135)

☆ If one cannot recite them even by midnight, the evening time has passed, but if one recites them whenever possible before the morning time, then according to some scholars there is room for that too. Allah knows best.

I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the accursed. Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

  1. Surah al-Baqarah, no. (2), verse (255).

No narration is established about reciting Ayat al-Kursi among the morning and evening supplications. The hadith on this, that whoever recites it in the morning will be protected until the evening and whoever recites it in the evening will be protected until the morning, is narrated from Ubayy bin Ka'b (RA) [as-Sunan al-Kubra of an-Nasa'i no. (10731), al-Mustadrak of al-Hakim, Indian edition (1/561) and others], but in it “Ibn Ubayy” is not identified; Allamah al-Albani (RH) also admitted that he could not be identified. In addition, there is inconsistency in its chain and text. A hadith with the same meaning is also narrated from Abu Hurairah (RA) (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. 2879), but in its chain “Abd ar-Rahman al-Mulayki” is weak. For details see the present writer's book: “The Sunnah Remembrances after the Obligatory Prayers”

Note that Allamah al-Albani (RH) graded some of the related narrations Sahih, but he called shadh the words that mention reciting Ayat al-Kursi in the morning and evening. See: (as-Sahihah 7/743). However, in Sahih at-Targhib (1/417) he graded this narration Sahih with these words and gave no explanation in the footnote. Most probably the Allamah did not notice these words here. Allah knows best.

This is the same hadith of Uqbah bin Amir (RA) about which it has been explained that the addition of Surah al-Ikhlas in it is not established; see page (79) of this book.

Likewise, the number three and the mention of morning and evening are also not established; however, the routes of this hadith that teach reciting the Mu'awwidhatayn after the obligatory prayer are established. See: [Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (2903), al-Arba'un of Ibn Asakir (page 83), al-Awsat of Ibn al-Mundhir (3/277), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in “Sahih Sunan at-Tirmidhi” (3/161) no. (2903)].

Some calling it “Hasan” is wrong, because in its chain “Muslim bin Ziyad” is unknown, so this chain is weak, as Allamah al-Albani (RH) said; see: ad-Da'ifah, no. (1041).

This hadith is also narrated from Abu Hurairah (RA) with different wording; see: Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (3392), Sunan Abi Dawud no. (5067). The author quoted the words of this hadith, but at the end added a piece of the hadith of Abdullah bin Amr (RA), which is an entirely separate hadith. This hadith also says: whoever says it three times in the morning and evening, it will be a duty upon Allah to be pleased with him on the Day of Resurrection.

Some have called the hadith of Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (5072), Hasan, although in its chain there is “Sabiq bin Najiyah”, for whom there is no reliable and explicit authentication, and Imam adh-Dhahabi said that only one narrator narrated from him (Mizan al-I'tidal: 2/109). The identity of such a narrator is also regarded as unknown, which is why Allamah al-Albani (RH) called him majhul al-'ayn (ad-Da'ifah 11/30). So there is no room to make him “hasan in hadith” with the support of authentications based on a mistake.

This is among the morning remembrances only. Some narrations also mention the evening, but that is shadh. For details see: as-Sahihah of al-Albani (6/1231).

Dua 20

Recite the following words a hundred times:

سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ وَبِحَمْدِهٖ

I glorify Allah with His praise.

Open dua
  1. Sahih Muslim, no. (2692), the wording is his, Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (5091), Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (3469).

Its virtue is stated in this hadith: whoever says it a hundred times in the morning and evening, no one will come on the Day of Resurrection with better deeds than him.

Dua 21

Recite the following words ten times:

لَآ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهٗ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهٗ ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ

There is no deity except Allah; He is alone and has no partner. His is the dominion and His is all praise, and He has full power over all things.

Open dua
  1. Sahih, Musnad Ahmad (2/360), as-Sunan al-Kubra of an-Nasa'i, no. (9770), and al-Albani graded it Sahih according to the conditions of the two Shaykhs in “as-Sahihah” (6/137).

Note that “Suhayl bin Abi Salih” is not in this chain, and this chain is sahih according to the conditions of the two Shaykhs. Its virtue is stated in this hadith: whoever says it ten times in the morning, a hundred good deeds will be written for him, a hundred mistakes will be wiped away, he will get the reward of freeing a slave, and he will be protected that day; and whoever says it ten times in the evening will also get the same reward after it.

Guidance 22

At times of laziness, these words may be said even once

  1. Sahih, Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (5077), Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (3867), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in his notes on “Hidayat ar-Ruwat” (2/472) no. (2332).

“Suhayl bin Abi Salih” is in this chain, but his memory confusion is only to the extent of a slight change, so his narration will not be rejected unless his mistake in a particular narration is proven by evidence or clear signs.

Dua 23

Recite the following words a hundred times in the morning:

لَآ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهٗ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهٗ ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ

There is no deity except Allah; He is alone and has no partner. His is the dominion and His is all praise, and He has full power over all things.

Open dua
  1. Sahih al-Bukhari, no. (3293), Sahih Muslim, no. (2691).

Its virtue is that whoever says it a hundred times in a day will get the reward of freeing ten slaves, a hundred good deeds will be written for him, a hundred sins will be wiped away, and he will be protected from Satan for the whole day. From this last point we learn that it should be said as soon as the day begins, that is, in the morning, so that there may be protection from Satan for the whole day. It has no connection with the evening remembrances.

Dua 24

Recite the following words three times in the morning:

سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ وَبِحَمْدِهٖ عَدَدَ خَلْقِهٖ وَرِضَا نَفْسِهٖ وَزِنَةَ عَرْشِهٖ وَمِدَادَ كَلِمَاتِهٖ

I glorify Allah with His praise, as many times as the number of His creation, as much as pleases Him, as much as the weight of His Throne and as much as the ink of His words.

Open dua
  1. Sahih Muslim, no. (2726), Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (1503).

Some narrations show that the tasbih should be said three times separately with each of the phrases mentioned, like this:

See: Sunan an-Nasa'i, no. (1352), Sunan at-Tirmidhi (3555), Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (3808), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in “as-Sahihah” no. (2156).

Dua 25

Weak narration

Recite the following words in the morning:

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّيْٓ اَسْئَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَّافِعًا وَّرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا وَّعَمَلًا مُّتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah! Indeed, I ask You for knowledge that benefits, for provision that is pure and for deeds that are accepted.

  1. Da'eef, Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (925), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in his notes on “Hidayat ar-Ruwat” (3/35).

This relates to saying it after the Fajr prayer. This narration has already passed; see (page 85) of this book, where its chain has been explained.

Dua 26

Say the following words a hundred times a day:

اَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّٰهَ وَاَتُوْبُ اِلَيْهِ

I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance.

Dua 27

Recite the following words three times in the evening:

اَعُوْذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللّٰهِ التَّآمَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah the Most High from the evil of what He has created.

Open dua
  1. Sahih Muslim, no. (2709), Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (3518), Sunan at-Tirmidhi, ed. Dr Bashshar (5/555) no. (3604 m1), where it has “three times”, and al-Albani graded it Sahih in “Sahih at-Targhib” (1/412).

Its virtue is stated in this hadith: whoever says these words three times in the evening, nothing poisonous will harm him that night.

Dua 28

Weak narration

Send blessings ten times in these words:

اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ عَلٰى نَبِيِّنَا مُحَمَّدٍ

O Allah! Send mercy and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

Open dua
  1. Da'eef, munqati', as-Salat ala an-Nabi of Ibn Abi Asim (page 48), al-Mu'jam al-Kabir of at-Tabarani, as in Jala' al-Afham (page 127), and al-Albani graded it Da'eef in “ad-Da'ifah” no. (5788) and in “Da'if at-Targhib” (1/200).

The author's book gives al-Albani's Sahih at-Targhib wa at-Tarhib (1/273) as the reference for it, although this hadith is in Da'if at-Targhib wa at-Tarhib (1/200), and Allamah al-Albani (RH) called it weak.
