The Prophet ﷺ said: Saying Subhanallah is a charity. (Sahih Muslim: 720)

The Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever says Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 33 times after every (obligatory) prayer, making 99, and then completes 100 by saying: 'La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu, wahuwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir', then his sins will be forgiven, even if they are equal to the foam of the sea. (Sahih Muslim: 597)

This is one of the four most beloved phrases to Allah. (Sahih Muslim: 2137)

Every time you say it, a tree is planted for you in Paradise. (Sunan Ibn Majah: 3807)

The Prophet ﷺ said: Take your shield against the fire of Hell! Say: 'Subhanallah, wal-hamdulillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar', because these phrases will come on the Day of Resurrection as means of salvation and protection. (Al-Mustadrak Al-Hakim: 1921)

Hazrat Jabir (RA) said: Whenever we descended from a height, we would say Subhanallah. (Sahih Bukhari: 2993)

How to Use

  1. Choose a dhikr

Tap the dhikr name to pick one of six: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi SubhanAllahil Azeem, or Astaghfirullah. Its virtues from the hadith are listed just below it.

  3. Tap to count

Tap anywhere on the counter card each time you recite. On a computer, you can press the Space bar instead. The ring fills as you get closer to your target.

  4. Complete a round

When you reach your target, the counter adds one to your completed rounds and starts again from zero, so you can carry on.

  5. Fix a mistake

Tap Decrease (−) to take back an extra count, or Reset to clear both the count and the rounds.

  6. Adjust the settings

In Settings, turn Vibration, the tap Sound or the Translation under the Arabic on or off, or choose Full Screen for a larger counter with nothing else on the screen.

Virtues & Benefits of Daily Dhikr

These verses and hadiths are the opening chapter of Hisnul Muslim, “The importance and virtue of remembering Allah (dhikr)”, each with the book's own reference.

  • Allah the Most High says:

So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.

    Surah al-Baqarah, no. (2), verse (152)

And (O Prophet ﷺ!) remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.

    Surah al-A'raf, no. (7), verse (205).

  • Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:

The example of the one who remembers his Lord and (of) the one who does not remember his Lord is like that of the living and the dead.

Sahih al-Bukhari, no. (6407), the wording is his. In Sahih Muslim no. (779) and other books of hadith the wording is: “مثل البيت الذي يذكر الله فيه والبيت الذي لا يذكر الله فيه مثل الحي والميت”.

  • Abu ad-Darda' (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:

Shall I not tell you of a deed that is the best of all your deeds, the purest in the sight of your King, the highest in raising your ranks, better for you than giving gold and silver in charity, and better for you than meeting your enemy so that you strike their necks and they strike your necks? The Companions said: Certainly! (Do tell us of such a deed) He said: “(It is) the remembrance of Allah the Most High.”

Sahih, Sunan at-Tirmidhi no. (3377), the wording is his, Sunan Ibn Majah no. (3790), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in his notes on “Hidayat ar-Ruwat” (2/422) no. (2209).

  • Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:

Allah the Most High says: I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me within himself, I remember him within Myself; and if he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than theirs; and if he draws near to Me by a hand-span, I draw near to him by an arm's length; and if he draws near to Me by an arm's length, I draw near to him by the span of two outstretched arms; and if he comes to Me walking, I come to him running.

Sahih al-Bukhari, no. (7405), the wording is his, Sahih Muslim no. (2675).

  • Abdullah bin Busr (RA) narrated:

A man said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The rulings of Islam have become too many for me, so tell me of something (small yet great in reward) that I can hold on to firmly. He ﷺ said: “لَا يَزَالُ لِسَانُكَ رَطْبًا مِّنْ ذِكْرِ اللّٰهِ” Let your tongue remain moist with the remembrance of Allah.

Sahih, Sunan at-Tirmidhi no. (3375), the wording is his, Sunan Ibn Majah (3793), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in “Takhrij al-Kalim at-Tayyib” no. (3).

  • Abdullah bin Mas'ud (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:

Whoever reads one letter of the Book of Allah will have a good deed for it, and a good deed is rewarded as ten like it (that is, a tenfold reward). I do not say that “Alif-Lam-Mim” is one letter, but “Alif” is a letter, “Lam” is a letter and “Mim” is a letter.

Hasan, Sunan at-Tirmidhi no. (2910), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in “as-Sahihah” no. (3327).

  • Uqbah bin Amir (RA) narrated:

Allah's Messenger ﷺ came out (of his house) while we were in “the Suffah”, and he said: “Which of you would like to go out every day to Buthan or al-Aqiq and bring back from there two she-camels with large humps, without committing any sin or cutting family ties? We said: O Messenger of Allah! We (all) would like that. He said: Does not one of you go out to the mosque and learn or recite two verses from Allah, the Mighty and Majestic? That is better for him than two she-camels, three verses are better for him than three (she-camels), four (verses) are better for him than four (she-camels), and (however many verses there are) than their number of camels (they are better).”

Sahih Muslim, no. (803), the wording is his, Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (1456).

  • Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that Allah's Messenger ﷺ said:

Whoever sits in a place where he does not remember Allah the Most High, that (sitting) will be a cause of loss for him from Allah the Most High. And whoever lies down in a place where he does not remember Allah the Most High, that (lying down) will be a cause of loss for him from Allah the Most High.

Hasan, Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (4856), and al-Albani graded it Hasan in “as-Sahihah”, no. (78). In place of the bracketed words the original book has “لَمْ يَذْكُرِ”, but in Sunan Abi Dawud it is “لَا يَذْكُر”.

  • Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:

When people sit in a gathering in which they neither remember Allah nor send blessings upon their Prophet, that (gathering) will be a cause of loss for them. Then if (Allah the Most High) wills He will punish them, and if He wills He will forgive them.

Sahih, Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (3380), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in “as-Sahihah” (1/23-26) and no. (74). Sufyan from Salih: Imarah bin Ghaziyyah supported him in this in Ibn Abi Asim's as-Salat ala an-Nabi ﷺ (page 66), and its chain is sahih. In narrating from Salih, Sufyan is supported by Imarah bin Ghaziyyah (as-Salat of Ibn Abi Asim, page 66), so there is no room at all to object to the route of Sufyan from Salih or to Sufyan's 'an'anah.

  • Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that Allah's Messenger ﷺ said:

When people get up from a gathering in which they did not remember Allah, they get up from something like the stinking corpse of a dead donkey, and (this deed) will be a cause of regret for them.

Sahih, Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (4855), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in “as-Sahihah” no. (77).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tasbeeh?

Tasbeeh (tasbih) means glorifying Allah by saying SubhanAllah, “Glory be to Allah”: declaring that He is free of every imperfection. Allah commands it in the Quran: “and glorify Him morning and evening” (Quran 33:42). In everyday use, tasbeeh also means counted dhikr in general, such as SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah and Allahu Akbar, and the string of beads some people count it on.

How do I do tasbeeh after namaz?

After each obligatory namaz, say SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu Akbar 34 times (Sahih Muslim: 596). Another authentic way is to say each of the three 33 times and complete the hundred with “La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir”. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever does this after every prayer has his sins forgiven, even if they are like the foam of the sea (Sahih Muslim: 597). Set the target to 33 or 34 to count each one.

What is Tasbeeh-e-Fatimah?

When Fatimah (RA) asked the Prophet ﷺ for a servant, he taught her and Ali (RA) to say, when they went to bed, Allahu Akbar 34 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and SubhanAllah 33 times, and said this was better for them than a servant (Sahih Bukhari: 3113; Sahih Muslim: 2727). This is commonly known as Tasbeeh-e-Fatimah.

Is it Sunnah to count tasbeeh on the fingers? Can I use a counter?

Counting on the fingers is the Sunnah. Abdullah ibn Amr (RA) said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ counting tasbeeh on his right hand” (Sunan Abu Dawud: 1502, sahih). The Prophet ﷺ also told women to count dhikr on their fingertips, “for they will be questioned and made to speak” (Sunan Abu Dawud: 1501, hasan). Scholars differ about using beads or a counter: many allow them as an aid to keeping count, while others discourage them. Counting on the fingers is better whenever you can.

Do I need wudu to do dhikr?

No. Aishah (RA) said: “The Prophet ﷺ used to remember Allah at all times” (Sahih Muslim: 373). You can do dhikr with or without wudu, at any time of the day.

Should dhikr be said silently or aloud?

Allah says: “And remember your Lord within yourself, humbly and with fear, and without loudness of speech, in the mornings and the evenings” (Quran 7:205). When the Companions raised their voices with La ilaha illallah and Allahu Akbar while travelling with the Prophet ﷺ, he said: “O people, be gentle with yourselves, for you are not calling one who is deaf or absent. He is with you; He is All-Hearing, Near” (Sahih Bukhari: 2992). Ibn Abbas (RA) reported that in the Prophet's ﷺ time, people raised their voices with dhikr on finishing the obligatory prayers (Sahih Bukhari: 841).

What is the best dhikr?

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best dhikr is La ilaha illallah” (Jami at-Tirmidhi: 3383, hasan). He ﷺ also said that the most beloved words to Allah are four: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illallah and Allahu Akbar (Sahih Muslim: 2137).

Does the counter save my count?

Yes. Your count, completed rounds and the target for each dhikr are saved in this browser on your device, so they are still there when you come back. Choosing a different dhikr starts the count from zero, and clearing your browser data removes everything.

Is the tasbeeh counter free? Do I need an app?

It is free and runs in the browser on your phone or computer. There is nothing to install and no account to create.

What does a “round” mean?

A round is complete each time you reach your target. The counter then adds one to your completed rounds and starts again from zero; if Vibration is on and your phone supports it, the phone vibrates. With the ∞ target there are no rounds: the count simply keeps going.
