Supplications of the funeral prayer

Dua 1

O Allah! Forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him. Make his hospitality honourable and make his grave spacious, and wash away his sins with water, snow and hail. Cleanse him of sins as You have cleansed the white garment of dirt. Give him in exchange a home better than his home, a family better than his family and a wife better than his wife. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

  1. Sahih Muslim, no. (963), the wording is his, Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (1500), as-Sunan al-Kubra of an-Nasa'i, no. (1983), and the words in square brackets are in both of them; it is also in Muslim, but with doubt, Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (1025).

Dua 2

O Allah! Forgive our living and our dead, those of us present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah! Whoever of us You keep alive, keep him alive upon Islam, and whoever of us You take in death, take him upon faith. O Allah! Do not deprive us of his (the deceased's) reward, and do not lead us astray after him.

  1. Sahih, Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (3201), Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (1498), the wording is his, Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (1024), Sunan an-Nasa'i, no. (1986), as-Sunan al-Kubra of al-Bayhaqi, Indian edition (4/41), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in “Ahkam al-Jana'iz” (page 124).

In the chain of Sunan Abi Dawud, the objection to the 'an'anah of “Yahya bin Abi Kathir” is not correct, because he is free of tadlis. Some scholars used the word tadlis for him in the sense of irsal; he is by no means a real mudallis. For Allamah al-Albani's (RH) research on this see: [ar-Rawd ad-Dani, (page 165, 166)]; see also: [ad-Du'afa' of al-Uqayli, ed. Dr Mazin (6/395), and its chain is hasan, Tahdhib al-Kamal of al-Mizzi (10/78)].

The chain of Sunan Ibn Majah is also sahih, because Muhammad bin Ishaq stated clearly that he heard it in “Amali Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Jurjani”, (Amali Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Jurjani, q 175/a), and its chain is sahih, so the objection to the 'an'anah of Muhammad bin Ishaq is not correct.

Dua 3

O Allah! Indeed, so-and-so son of so-and-so is in Your care and under Your protection, so protect him from the trial of the grave and the punishment of the Fire. You are the One of faithfulness and truth, so forgive him and have mercy on him. Indeed, You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

  1. Sahih, Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (1499), the wording is his, Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (3202), al-Awsat of Ibn al-Mundhir (5/441), where al-Walid states hearing all along the chain, and al-Albani graded it Sahih in “Ahkam al-Jana'iz” (page 125).

Dua 4

O Allah! (This is) Your servant, the son of Your maidservant; he has become in need of Your mercy, and You have no need to punish him. If he was a doer of good, increase his good deeds, and if he was a wrongdoer, pass over his misdeeds.

The reciter says “fazid fee hasanaatihi” (his good deeds) instead of “fazid fee ihsaanihi” (his good conduct).

  1. Hasan, al-Mustadrak of al-Hakim (1/359), the wording is his, al-Ahad wa al-Mathani of Ibn Abi Asim, no. (444); al-Hakim graded it sahih, and adh-Dhahabi and al-Albani agreed with him; see: Ahkam al-Jana'iz of al-Albani (page 125).

Yazid bin Rukanah (RA) is a Companion, as Imam al-Hakim stated clearly, so the objection of irsal is not correct. This hadith is also narrated from Abu Hurairah (RA) in almost the same words; see: [Sahih Ibn Hibban, ed. al-Arna'ut (no. 3073)], but there is a difference over whether it is marfu' or mawquf. It appears that it is sahih both ways: Abu Hurairah (RA) sometimes narrated it as marfu' and sometimes as mawquf.
