What should a Muslim say on hearing himself praised?

Dua 1

O Allah! Do not take me to account for what these people say, and forgive me what they do not know and make me better than what they think (of me).

Sahih Mawquf, al-Adab al-Mufrad of al-Bukhari, ed. Abd al-Baqi, no. (761), Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, ed. ash-Shathri, no. (38446), az-Zuhd of Ahmad bin Hanbal, no. (1150), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in “Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad” (page 284).

In the narration of Ibn Abi Shaybah, Mubarak bin Fadalah stated clearly that he heard it, so whoever called its chain weak is mistaken.

  2. 2

Munqati', Musannafat Abi al-Abbas al-Asamm, no. (278), Shu'ab al-Iman, ar-Rushd print (6/504), from one of the Salaf, the wording is theirs; something similar is in al-Mujtana of Ibn Durayd, Uthmaniyyah print (page 15), and through his route Ibn Asakir narrated it in Tarikh Dimashq (3/332) from Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, and its chain is broken; al-Albani mentioned it in “Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad” (page 284) and was silent about this addition.
