Congratulating someone on a newborn, and the reply

Dua 1

Weak narration

May Allah bless for you the one given to you; may you thank the Giver; may (this child) reach his full strength; and may you be granted his kindness.

  1. Da'eef, maqtu': al-Adhkar of Imam an-Nawawi (1/363). In this book of Imam an-Nawawi this athar is mentioned from Husayn (RA), but perhaps that is a copying mistake and the correct name is “Hasan”, because such words are found attributed to al-Hasan al-Basri; yet they are not established from Imam al-Hasan al-Basri either. Ibn al-Qayyim quoted the saying of al-Hasan al-Basri on the authority of Ibn al-Mundhir (Tuhfat al-Mawdud page 29), but this chain of Ibn al-Mundhir is not available. However, with a difference in wording its chain is found in (Musnad Ibn al-Ja'd page 488), but in it “Haytham” is very weak. It has some other chains, but all of them are weak. However, on this occasion these words are established from al-Hasan al-Basri: “جَعَلَهُ اللّٰهُ مُبَارَكًا عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى اُمَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ” [ad-Du'a' of at-Tabarani, ed. Muhammad Sa'id, no. (945), and its chain is hasan]. These same words are also established from Ayyub as-Sakhtiyani [al-Iyal of Ibn Abi ad-Dunya, no. (202), and its chain is hasan].

It is established that the Prophet ﷺ supplicated for blessing for a newborn, [Sahih al-Bukhari, no. (5467)], but the wording of it is not reported with a sahih chain. In Musnad al-Bazzar these words come as marfu': “بَارَكَ اللّٰهُ لَكَ فِيْهِ وَجَعَلَهٗ بَرًّا تَقِيًّا” [Musnad al-Bazzar, no. (7310)]. Its narrators are trustworthy, but the chain is mursal.

Dua 2

Weak narration

The one congratulated should reply, saying:

بَارَكَ اللّٰهُ لَكَ وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ وَجَزَاكَ اللّٰهُ خَيْرًا وَّرَزَقَكَ اللّٰهُ مِثْلَهٗ وَاَجْزَلَ ثَوَابَكَ

May Allah the Most High bless you and bestow blessings upon you, may Allah reward you with good, may Allah grant you the like of it, and may He make your reward abundant.

  1. This is Imam an-Nawawi's (RH) own saying; see: al-Adhkar of Imam an-Nawawi (1/363).
