On hearing the adhan, say the same words the muezzin says1, except that in reply to ”حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلٰوةِ“ and ”حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ“ “Come to the prayer, come to success”, say ” لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ“ (there is no strength to avoid sin nor power to do good except through the help and enabling of Allah)”2. After the muezzin says the two testimonies3, say this supplication:
1
Sahih al-Bukhari, no. (611), Sahih Muslim, no. (383), Sunan Abi Dawud, (522), Sunan at-Tirmidhi (208), Sunan an-Nasa'i, no. (673), Sunan Ibn Majah, (720).
2
Sahih al-Bukhari, no. (613).
3
Sahih, Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar (1/145), Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, no. (422), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in “ath-Thamar al-Mustatab” (page 183).
And I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah alone, He has no partner, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and Messenger. I am pleased with Allah as Lord, with Muhammad ﷺ as Messenger and with Islam as religion.
The reciter says “wa anna Muhammadan” without the second “ash-hadu”.
Sahih Muslim, no. (386), Sunan Abi Dawud (525), the wording is his, Sunan Ibn Majah (721), Sunan an-Nasa'i (679). Instead of these words, saying only the short form “وَأَنَا، وَأَنَا” is also established, Sunan Abi Dawud (526), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in “Sahih Abi Dawud” (538).
Guidance 3
After replying to the muezzin, send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, then say this supplication:
Sahih Muslim, no. (384), Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (523), Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (3614), Sunan an-Nasa'i, no. (678).
O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and of the prayer to be established! Grant Muhammad ﷺ al-wasilah and excellence, and raise him to the praised station that You have promised him. Indeed, You do not break Your promise.
Sahih al-Bukhari, no. (614), Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (529), Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (211), Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (722), the wording is theirs, Sunan an-Nasa'i, no. (680).
2
Da'eef because this wording is shadh, as-Sunan al-Kubra of al-Bayhaqi, Indian edition (1/410), and al-Albani graded it Da'eef in “ad-Da'ifah” (11/293).
Guidance 5
“Supplicate for yourself between the adhan and the iqamah, for a supplication made at that time is not rejected.”
Sahih, Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (521), Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (212), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in “Sahih Abi Dawud” (3/14) no. (534).
