The virtue of praising and glorifying Allah, takbir, and La ilaha illallah

Guidance 1

Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: “Whoever says a hundred times in a day: ” سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ وَبِحَمْدِهٖ“ (Glory be to Allah with all His praise), his sins are forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea.”

  1. Sahih al-Bukhari, no. (6405), Sahih Muslim, no. (2691), Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (3468), Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (3812).

Guidance 2

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever says this supplication ten times:

” لَآ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهٗ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهٗ ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ “ “There is no deity except Allah; He is alone and has no partner. His alone is the dominion and His is all praise, and He has full power over all things.”

he will be like one who has freed four slaves from the children of Isma'il, peace be upon him.”

  1. Sahih al-Bukhari, no. (6404), Sahih Muslim, no. (2693), the wording is his, Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (3553).

Guidance 3

He ﷺ said: “Two phrases are light on the tongue, (but) very heavy in the Balance and most beloved to Allah the Most High. (They are:) ”سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ وَبِحَمْدِهٖ سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ الْعَظِيْمِ “ “Glory be to Allah with all His praise; glory be to Allah the Magnificent.”

  1. Sahih al-Bukhari, no. (6682), Sahih Muslim, no. (2694), Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (3806), the wording is theirs, Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (3467).

Guidance 4

He ﷺ said: “That I say these (words): ”سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ وَ لَآ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا الله وَاللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ“ “Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no deity except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.” is dearer to me than everything the sun rises upon.”

  1. Sahih Muslim, no. (2695), Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (3597).

Guidance 5

He ﷺ said: “Is any one of you unable to earn a thousand good deeds every day? One of those sitting with him asked: How can any of us earn a thousand good deeds? He said: Let him say ”سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ“ a hundred times; a thousand good deeds are written (in his record) for him, and a thousand of his sins are wiped away.”

  1. Sahih Muslim, no. (2698).

Guidance 6

Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: “Whoever says once: ”سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ الْعَظِيْمِ وَبِحَمْدِهٖ“ “Glory be to Allah the Magnificent, with His praise”, a date palm is planted for him in Paradise.”

  1. Sahih, Sunan at-Tirmidhi, (3464), and al-Albani graded it Hasan in “as-Sahihah” no. (64)

It is not established that Abu az-Zubayr was a mudallis in the technical sense. Some called him a mudallis in the sense of narrating from a book a hadith he had not heard, but this is not technical tadlis; rather it is narrating from a book, and that too from a book all of whose hadiths Abu az-Zubayr had either heard from Jabir (RA) himself or heard from Jabir (RA) through someone else. Abu az-Zubayr himself said:

“منه ما سمعت، ومنه ما حدثت عنه” Some of the hadiths in it (the written collection) I heard from Jabir (RA) directly, and some someone else narrated to me from Jabir [ad-Du'afa' of al-Uqayli, ed. Dr Mazin (5/382), and its chain is sahih]

Since Abu az-Zubayr had the original written collection of Jabir (RA), the hadiths of Jabir (RA) that he had heard through someone, and that were in this collection, he narrated directly from the book. This practice is also called tadlis, and some called Abu az-Zubayr a mudallis in this sense. But the 'an'anah of such a mudallis is not rejected. For further details see Anwar an-Nasihah (t/3464).

Guidance 7

He ﷺ said: “O Abdullah bin Qays, shall I not tell you of one of the treasures of Paradise? I said: Certainly, O Messenger of Allah! He ﷺ said: “Say: ” لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ“, “There is no strength to avoid sin nor power to do good except through the enabling of Allah.”

  1. Sahih al-Bukhari, no. (4205), Sahih Muslim, no. (2704), Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (1526), Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (3461), Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (3824).

Guidance 8

He ﷺ said: “The four phrases most beloved to Allah the Most High are: ”سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ وَلَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَاللّٰهُ اَكْبَرُ“ “Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no true deity except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.” It does not matter which of them you say first.”

  1. Sahih Muslim, no. (2137), the wording is his, Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (3811).

Guidance 9

A Bedouin (desert Arab) came to him ﷺ and said: “Teach me some words that I can say. He said: Say:

” لَآ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهٗ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهٗ اَللّٰهُ اَكْبَرُ كَبِيْرًا وَّالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ كَثِيْرًا وَّسُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ الْعَزِيْزِ الْحَكِيْمِ “, “There is no true deity except Allah; He is alone and has no partner. Allah is the Greatest, truly great; much praise is for Allah; and glory be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. There is no strength to avoid evil nor power to do good except through the enabling of Allah, the Almighty (and) the All-Wise.”

The Bedouin said: These words are for my Lord; what is there for me?

He ﷺ said: Say this: ” اَللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِيْ وَارْحَمْنِيْ وَاهْدِنِيْ وَارْزُقْنِيْ“ “O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me and provide for me.”

  1. Sahih Muslim, no. (2696), the wording is his, Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (832).

At the end of the narration of Abu Dawud: When the Bedouin left, the Prophet ﷺ said: He has filled his hands with good.

Guidance 10

“When someone became Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ would teach him the prayer, then command him to supplicate with these words: ” اَللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِيْ وَارْحَمْنِيْ وَاهْدِنِيْ وَارْزُقْنِيْ“ “O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me and provide for me.”

  1. Sahih Muslim, no. (2697), the wording is his, Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (3845).

In Sahih Muslim, at the end of one route of this narration, there is this addition: “These words will gather for you the good of this world and the Hereafter”.

Guidance 11

He ﷺ said: “The best remembrance is ” لَآ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ“, and the best supplication is ”اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ“.”

  1. Hasan, Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (3383), Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (3800), and al-Albani graded it Hasan in his notes on “Hidayat ar-Ruwat” (2/435) no. (2246), “as-Sahihah” no. (1497).
