What to say on hearing pleasing or displeasing news?

When pleasing news came to Allah's Messenger ﷺ, he would say:

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِيْ بِنِعْمَتِهٖ تَتِمُّ الصَّالِحَاتُ

All praise is for Allah, by whose favour good things are completed.

When something displeasing happened, he ﷺ would say:

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ عَلٰى كُلِّ حَالٍ

All praise is for Allah in every state.

1. Hasan li-ghairihi, Sunan Ibn Majah, no. (3803), al-Mustadrak of al-Hakim, Indian edition (1/499), who graded it sahih, from the hadith of Aishah, Musnad al-Bazzar, no. (533), from the hadith of Ali, al-Asami wa al-Kuna of Abu Ahmad al-Hakim (q 179/a), from the hadith of Ibn Abbas, and al-Albani graded it Hasan in “as-Sahihah” (the new edition) no. (265); in the old edition he had held back from firmly grading it Hasan.
