Supplications for sneezing

Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: When any of you sneezes, he should say: ” اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ ““All praise is for Allah.” And his friend or brother should say: ” يَرْحَمُكَ اللّٰهُ ““May Allah have mercy on you”. And when his brother says this, the one who sneezed should say: ”يَهْدِيْكُمُ اللّٰهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ“ “May Allah guide you and set your affairs right.”

1. Sahih al-Bukhari, no. (6224), the wording is his, Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (5033), Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (2747).

If a non-Muslim says ”اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ“ on sneezing, he should be told:

يَهْدِيْكُمُ اللّٰهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

May Allah guide you and set your affairs right.

1. Sahih, Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (5038), Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. (2739), al-Adab al-Mufrad of al-Bukhari, no. (940), and al-Albani graded it Sahih in “al-Irwa'” (5/119) no. (1277).
